Frequently Asked Questions
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Gulfport?
National guides put installed spray foam at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot (HomeGuide, 2026), with open cell at the low end and closed cell at the high end. A 1,000 square foot area runs about $1,500 to $5,000 in HomeGuide's figures. We measure the space and give you a written price; that written figure is what you pay.
What is the cost difference between spray foam and fiberglass?
Fiberglass costs less up front. Fixr lists blown fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot, while HomeGuide lists open-cell foam at $1.50 to $3.50 and closed cell at $3.00 to $5.00. Foam also air seals as it insulates, which fiberglass does not, so the comparison depends on how leaky the house is and where the insulation goes.
Can mold grow behind spray foam insulation?
Foam itself is not food for mold, but it can trap water that gets in from a roof leak, a plumbing leak or a wet crawl space. That is why we fix or flag leaks first and use closed-cell foam where moisture is likely. Once it is sprayed, a slow leak can be harder to spot, so keeping an eye on the roof matters.
Does it snow in Gulfport?
Rarely. Gulfport's climate is humid subtropical and moderated by the Gulf; flurries are uncommon and most years see no real accumulation. The record low is 1F from February 1899, but insulation here is mostly about summer heat and humidity, not snow load.
Is there a DIY spray foam kit I can use instead?
Two-part kits are sold for small areas like a rim board or a few gaps. For an attic, a roof deck or a whole floor, getting even thickness and proper mixing is hard without professional equipment, and poorly mixed foam can smell, shrink or pull away from framing. We are happy to tell you which small jobs are reasonable to do yourself.
Should I spray the roof deck or insulate the attic floor?
If your air handler and ducts are in the attic, foam on the roof deck brings them inside the conditioned space, which can help a lot in this climate. If the ducts are elsewhere and the roof needs work soon, sealing the ceiling and blowing in fill to R-38 or more often costs less. We price both when both make sense.
How long do I need to stay out after spray foam?
HomeGuide advises staying out for at least 24 hours after spray foam is applied so the foam can cure and the area can air out. We give you a specific time for your job and ventilate during and after the work.
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Is spray foam insulation worth it in a hot, humid climate?
It often is when the ducts are in the attic or the house is leaky, because foam air seals and insulates at once. In a tight house with ducts inside, sealing plus blown-in insulation may give similar results for less. We look at the house and show you both options when both fit.
Does spray foam cause problems with roof inspections or insurance?
Foam on the roof deck covers the underside of the sheathing, so some inspectors and buyers want to see the roof condition before it goes on. We check the decking and photograph it first. If your insurer or lender has specific requirements, ask them before you book.
Can spray foam go over old insulation?
Not on the roof deck or in walls; foam needs to stick to a clean surface. On an attic floor, old insulation can usually stay if it is dry and clean, with sealing and new fill added on top. Wet, moldy or rodent-soiled insulation should come out first.
How thick does the foam need to be?
It depends on the target R-value and the foam type. Open cell at about R-3.6 per inch needs more depth than closed cell at about R-6 per inch. The quote lists the thickness for each area so you can compare.
Attic & Roof Deck Insulation Questions
How much attic insulation do I need in Gulfport?
ENERGY STAR suggests R-49 for an uninsulated Zone 2 attic and adding about R-38 where 3 to 4 inches exist. Mississippi Power's rebate needs at least R-38 finished. Most attics we see need sealing plus more depth.
Does roof deck foam affect my roof?
It covers the underside of the decking, so we check and photograph the sheathing first and want any leaks fixed before spraying. Ask your roofer or shingle maker whether an unvented attic affects your shingle warranty before you choose this option.
Can I get a rebate for attic insulation?
Mississippi Power lists 20 cents per square foot added for single-family residential customers when the attic reaches R-38, with paperwork due within 90 days. Funding is limited. Other utilities have their own programs, so check with yours.
Do you remove old insulation first?
Only when it is wet, moldy, soiled by rodents or in the way of sealing. Dry, clean insulation can stay under new fill. If removal is needed it is a separate line on the quote.
Crawl Space Encapsulation Questions
Is encapsulation better than insulating the floor?
If you have an enclosed crawl space, encapsulation treats the whole space and the ducts in it. If the house is on open piers, there is nothing to enclose, so floor foam is the answer. Some houses with partial skirting need a mix.
Do I need a dehumidifier after encapsulating?
Many sealed crawl spaces in humid climates do need one, or a small supply of conditioned air, to keep moisture in check. We tell you which we would recommend for your space.
Will foam under my floor stop termite inspections?
It can make them harder, which is why we plan inspection access before spraying near sills. Talk with your pest control company about what they need to see.
Can a flooded crawl space be encapsulated?
Drainage problems need fixing first. A liner does not stop water flowing in after storms. We point out drainage issues and seal once the space stays dry.
Wall Insulation Questions
Open cell or closed cell for exterior walls?
Closed cell gets more R-value into a 2x4 wall and adds stiffness; open cell fills the cavity for less money. Both air seal. We go over which fits your wall depth and budget.
Can you spray foam into existing finished walls?
Not the standard two-part foam; it expands too much behind finished surfaces. For closed walls we use dense-pack cellulose or blown fiberglass through small holes.
When should foam go in on a new build?
After plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough-ins are done and inspected, and before drywall. We coordinate with your builder.
Is it worth insulating walls that already have batts?
Usually not. Air sealing and attic or floor work tend to pay back faster in a house that already has wall batts.
Does wall insulation help with outside noise?
Yes, especially open-cell foam, which fills the cavity and dampens sound. It helps with road and neighbor noise, though windows and doors still let some through.
Metal Building & Shop Insulation Questions
How thick should foam be on a metal shop?
One inch of closed-cell foam usually stops condensation; two inches or more gives better heat control if you plan to cool the space. We price the options.
Can you foam a building that is full of stuff?
Yes, but contents need to be moved away from the walls or covered. We can talk through what needs to move before the job.
Does foam on the roof panels cause leaks to hide?
It can make small leaks harder to spot, so we check the roof for leaks and loose fasteners first.
Is open-cell foam OK for metal buildings?
Closed cell is the usual choice because it slows vapor and handles moisture better. Open cell can make sense on the roof of a building that will be fully conditioned.
Do I need a permit to insulate a shop?
Rules vary by city and county and by how the building is used. Check with Gulfport, Harrison County or your local building office before major work; we can give you the details they may ask for.
Insulation Removal Questions
Do I have to remove old insulation before adding more?
No, not if it is dry, clean and free of pests. Removal makes sense when it is contaminated or when it blocks needed sealing.
How long does insulation removal take?
A typical attic takes most of a day. Larger or heavily contaminated attics can take longer.
What about insulation after a roof leak?
Wet loose fill and batts lose much of their value and can grow mold. We remove the damaged section, check the decking and replace it once the roof is fixed.
Do you handle vermiculite?
No. If we see vermiculite, we recommend testing and a licensed asbestos abatement company.
Can old insulation be reused?
Clean, dry batts can sometimes be put back after air sealing. Contaminated, wet or matted insulation should not be reused.
Will removal make a mess in my house?
The vacuum hose runs from the attic to the outside, so material does not pass through your rooms. We cover the area under the attic hatch and clean up when we finish.
