What Spray Foam Does That Batts Can't
Spray foam insulation is a two-part liquid that expands as it is sprayed, sticks to wood, block and metal, and fills the cracks and gaps that batts and loose fill leave open. In a Gulfport house, where cooling runs most of the year, that air sealing is often worth as much as the R-value. Foam stops humid outdoor air from leaking in around top plates, wire holes, plumbing stacks and band joists, and it holds its place without settling.
Who usually needs it
Houses with ducts and an air handler in a hot attic. Raised homes where the floor is open to the air underneath. Additions and rebuilds where the walls are open. Metal buildings that sweat. Homes where you can feel hot spots on the ceiling in July or drafts at outlets in January. If none of that sounds like your house, another type of insulation may do the job for less, and we will tell you.
Open cell
Open-cell foam is about half a pound per cubic foot, roughly R-3.5 to R-3.7 per inch (HomeGuide), and stays slightly flexible. It costs less and is the usual choice for the underside of roof decks and for interior walls where sound control matters. It lets some water vapor pass, so we keep it away from places that stay damp.
Closed cell
Closed-cell foam is around two pounds per cubic foot, roughly R-5 to R-7 per inch, and hardens into a rigid layer that slows vapor and adds stiffness. We use it under raised floors, on crawl space walls, on metal buildings and in tight wall cavities where you need more R-value per inch. It costs more per square foot.
How we decide
We look at what the surface is, whether it stays dry, how much room there is and what R-value you need. Then the quote shows the foam type and thickness for each area so you know what you are paying for.
Where We Spray
Common foam jobs around Gulfport and the western coast.
Roof deck (unvented attic)
Open-cell foam on the underside of the roof sheathing so the attic, ducts and air handler sit inside the cooled envelope. Soffit and ridge vents get closed off as part of the job.
Open walls
Foam in exterior wall cavities during a rebuild, addition or remodel, before drywall goes up. Closed cell where you need the most R per inch.
Under raised floors
Closed-cell foam on the underside of the subfloor of homes on piers, which stops floor drafts and slows moisture coming up from below.
Metal buildings and shops
Closed-cell foam on steel walls and roof panels to control heat and stop condensation from dripping on tools and vehicles.
Rim boards and penetrations
Spot foam where floors meet walls and where pipes and wires pass through, often paired with blown-in insulation elsewhere.

National ranges from HomeGuide's 2026 guide and Fixr's 2025 guide, not local quotes. Foam type, depth, access and prep work all move the total, and small jobs often hit a minimum. We measure first, and the price written on your estimate is the price you pay.
How a Foam Job Goes
1. Look and measure
We inspect the attic, walls or floor, check for leaks and damp wood, and measure each area.
2. Written quote
Each area gets its own line with foam type, thickness, R-value and price.
3. Prep
We cover floors and belongings, mask fixtures and set up ventilation. Leaks get fixed or flagged before we spray.
4. Spray and trim
Foam goes on in passes to the planned thickness. We trim where needed and check depth.
5. Cure and walk-through
You stay out for the cure time we give you, then we walk the work with you and clean up.

Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Is spray foam insulation worth it in a hot, humid climate?
It often is when the ducts are in the attic or the house is leaky, because foam air seals and insulates at once. In a tight house with ducts inside, sealing plus blown-in insulation may give similar results for less. We look at the house and show you both options when both fit.
Does spray foam cause problems with roof inspections or insurance?
Foam on the roof deck covers the underside of the sheathing, so some inspectors and buyers want to see the roof condition before it goes on. We check the decking and photograph it first. If your insurer or lender has specific requirements, ask them before you book.
Can spray foam go over old insulation?
Not on the roof deck or in walls; foam needs to stick to a clean surface. On an attic floor, old insulation can usually stay if it is dry and clean, with sealing and new fill added on top. Wet, moldy or rodent-soiled insulation should come out first.
How thick does the foam need to be?
It depends on the target R-value and the foam type. Open cell at about R-3.6 per inch needs more depth than closed cell at about R-6 per inch. The quote lists the thickness for each area so you can compare.
