Walls Are Easiest to Insulate While They Are Open

Wall insulation goes in best when the studs are bare. Across the western coast, a lot of houses have been rebuilt, raised, added onto or gutted after storms, and that open-wall stage is the cheapest time to get the walls right. Spray foam fills around wiring, boxes and odd framing, seals the gaps where outside air leaks in, and does not sag over time the way poorly fit batts can.

Open walls: foam choices

Closed-cell foam gives the most R-value per inch in a 2x4 wall and adds rigidity, which some owners like in a wind-prone area. Open-cell foam fills the full cavity at a lower price and quiets sound well. We match the choice to the wall depth, the R-value you want and the budget, and we coordinate timing with your builder so foam goes in after rough-in inspections and before drywall.

Finished walls

In older homes with plaster or drywall already up, we can drill small holes and dense-pack cellulose or blow fiberglass into empty cavities, then patch. Spray foam is rarely the right choice for closed walls because it expands unpredictably behind finished surfaces. If your walls already have batts, filling them is usually not worth it; the attic and floor pay back faster.

Exterior walls and moisture

In a hot-humid climate, the wall has to dry toward the inside or outside without trapping moisture. We check the siding and housewrap situation and avoid combinations that trap water.

Wall Insulation Questions

Open cell or closed cell for exterior walls?

Closed cell gets more R-value into a 2x4 wall and adds stiffness; open cell fills the cavity for less money. Both air seal. We go over which fits your wall depth and budget.

Can you spray foam into existing finished walls?

Not the standard two-part foam; it expands too much behind finished surfaces. For closed walls we use dense-pack cellulose or blown fiberglass through small holes.

When should foam go in on a new build?

After plumbing, electrical and HVAC rough-ins are done and inspected, and before drywall. We coordinate with your builder.

Is it worth insulating walls that already have batts?

Usually not. Air sealing and attic or floor work tend to pay back faster in a house that already has wall batts.

Does wall insulation help with outside noise?

Yes, especially open-cell foam, which fills the cavity and dampens sound. It helps with road and neighbor noise, though windows and doors still let some through.
