Diamondhead Homes and Their Attics
Spray foam insulation in Diamondhead deals with a housing stock that grew out of a planned resort. Developers unveiled the project in 1969, with Hawaiian-style architecture and street names, and built streets, model homes and a country club soon after. It was pitched as a second-home development, and over the decades it turned into a year-round suburban community. The land rolls from sea level to more than 100 feet, which is unusual on this flat coast.
Resort-era homes
Houses built in the 1970s and early 1980s often have attics with whatever insulation went in at the time, sometimes topped up since, and ductwork that has been patched over the years. These are good candidates for a full attic job: air sealing, duct check, then blown-in fill to R-38 or more, or foam on the roof deck if the ducts are hard to seal.
Homes facing the bay
Katrina's surge of nearly 30 feet hit hardest on the south side of Diamondhead, facing the Bay of St. Louis, where many homes were badly damaged or destroyed. Houses rebuilt there may be raised, which brings floor insulation into play.
An older population
The 2020 census found a median age of 51 in Diamondhead, with about 30% of residents 65 or older. For many owners the priority is a house that stays comfortable without the AC running all afternoon. Diamondhead Questions
My Diamondhead home was built in the 1970s. Where should I start?
With the attic. We measure what is there, check the ducts and air handler, and look for leaks. Most homes that age need sealing and more depth, or roof deck foam if the ducts are a mess.
Will the hills in Diamondhead change anything about the job?
Not much for the insulation itself, but homes on slopes sometimes have taller crawl spaces or partly open undersides on the downhill side. We check what is under the house and price floor or crawl space work if it makes sense.
Is there a rebate for adding attic insulation in Diamondhead?
If Mississippi Power supplies your electricity, its ceiling insulation rebate lists 20 cents per square foot added in single-family homes when the attic reaches R-38. Funding is limited. Check your bill to see who supplies your power.
