Gulfport Houses, Old and New

Spray foam insulation in Gulfport means working on a city that has been rebuilt more than once. Hurricane Camille pushed storm water to about 21 feet on the waterfront in 1969, and Katrina struck in 2005 with winds of at least 100 mph and a surge of at least 19 feet, damaging or destroying 9,571 houses. What stands today is a mix of older homes that came through, houses repaired after those storms, and a large stock of newer construction, including subdivisions north of the old city.

Near the water and downtown

The blocks closest to the beach and the old railroad include houses from Gulfport's early growth, when the port made it the country's largest lumber exporter. These often have older attics with uneven fill, plank or board sheathing, and wood floors over a crawl space or piers. Typical work here: pull out stained or matted insulation, seal the ceiling, then build depth; and insulate or seal what is under the floor.

Mississippi City, Handsboro and the middle of town

Gulfport absorbed Mississippi City and Handsboro in 1965. Those areas hold a lot of mid-century brick ranch houses on slabs. Slab homes skip the crawl space question, so almost all of the payoff is overhead: ducts in the attic, a hatch that leaks, and insulation that has settled over decades.

North Gulfport

In December 1993 the city annexed 33 square miles north of town, taking in Turkey Creek and land that has since filled with subdivisions. Newer houses usually have more attic insulation to start with, but the air handler and long duct runs still sit in a hot attic. Those are the homes where open-cell foam on the roof deck can change how the upstairs feels. Larger lots out that way also have detached garages and metal shops that sweat.

Paperwork that helps

If you are a Mississippi Power customer, the utility's ceiling insulation rebate pays per square foot added once the attic reaches R-38. We write our quotes so the square footage and final R-value are easy to submit. Get a free estimate

Gulfport Questions

Do older Gulfport homes need their insulation removed?

Not always. If the existing fill is dry and clean we usually seal around it and add depth. Insulation stained by old roof leaks or soiled by rodents should come out first, and that shows as its own line on the quote.

Is roof deck foam a good idea in north Gulfport subdivisions?

Often, because those homes typically have the air handler and long duct runs in the attic. Foam on the deck brings that equipment inside the cooled space. We compare it with sealing plus blown-in so you can see both prices.

How long does an attic job take in Gulfport?

A seal-and-blow attic is usually a one-day job. Roof deck foam on an average house is often one to two days, plus cure time before you go back in.
